The DOJ Wants You to Know…

by | Apr 13, 2021 | DOJ, IRS, Tax Crimes |

The Department of Justice’s Tax Division’s success over the last year is a reminder to all taxpayers to make sure they are reporting and filing taxes timely and correctly. Throughout 2020, the Tax Division helped investigate and prosecute a multitude of tax offenses, including tax evasion by business owners, the filing of false tax returns, the failure to file and pay employment taxes, and all kinds of schemes including those involving mortgage recovery and identify theft. A summary of some of the Tax Division’s big successes in 2020 can be found here, including the sentencing of a Las Vegas man who used deceased taxpayers’ names and social security numbers to receive almost $2 million in refund checks.

In 2021, Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Stuart M. Goldberg wants taxpayers to know the Tax Division is working just as hard, and is “aggressively using its resources and expertise to identify, investigate, and prosecute those attempting to defraud and obstruct the IRS.”
