The IRS issued a statement regarding service details during the government shutdown. All tax deadlines remain in effect. Taxpayers must continue to file and make payments on time, however refunds will only be issued to individual taxpayers, and only if the tax return was filed electronically, without errors, and the refund is made by direct deposit.
Tax return filed electronically will continue to be processed, however paper returns will be held until government operations resume. Checks submitted with paper returns will be deposited by the IRS.
Most correspondence will go unanswered by the IRS, and taxpayer assistance centers, advocate services and offices of appeals are all closed during the shutdown.
Automated IRS telephone customer service lines remain available, and automated tools that provide transcript services may still be obtained.
Criminal investigation activities will continue.
