The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) inspected IRS facilities in Puerto Rico, with mixed results. On the positive side, the IRS has improved its ability to continue operations when Puerto Rico is affected by natural disasters, and the IRS has been able to meet minimum security and safety standards.
TIGTA also reviewed the vendor the IRS contracts with to destroy documents with sensitive taxpayer information and has concluded the IRS is not being overcharged for these services.
However, the IRS also found that some of the documents did not have the required barcodes to ensure accurate payments were made for services provided, the bins contained non-sensitive waste, that did not require being destroyed through the vendor, that the bins sometimes overflowed, and that the IRS did not regularly certify the vendor’s mobile shred trucks ensured sensitive information was protected.
