The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) recently reviewed the IRS’ Criminal Investigation Division’s activity following significant budget increases from 2019 through 2023. TIGA confirmed that the division’s special agency staffing has been minimally affected by recent government-wide cost-cutting measures, as of March 20, 2025. The increase in general fraud over investigations of tax law violations was attributed to the fraudulent claims related to pandemic relief legislation.
