The White House released an Executive Order calling for the U.S. Treasury to stop using paper checks and instead use direct deposit methods, with some exceptions.
While there may be difficulties that could arise out of this change, such as older adults not being familiar with direct deposit methods, it could be a good first step toward reducing the large amount of fraud seen when checks are sent to deceased taxpayers and then illegally deposited.
Direct deposit could help ensure that government checks are going to the right taxpayers and that fraudsters cannot easily take advantage of the system by utilizing the outdated process of sending paper checks.
