It’s true – the IRS now has a suggestion box where taxpayers can make recommendations on how the IRS may improve (in 500 characters or less). My first thought was the countless number of rude suggestions the IRS will receive, and that the people reviewing the suggestions could better spend their time helping with the IRS’ significant backlog. Then I reflected on how sad it is that the IRS can’t figure out how to fix itself. TIGTA (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration) recently issued a report that included in its summary that the IRS was unable to provide 94% of the paper files requested by TIGTA. The IRS’ average processing time for ERC claims is now more than one year; over 700,000 taxpayers are still waiting for refunds to be “unfrozen” and only 32% of calls were answered by IRS employees during the 2024 filing season.
