The Sky is Not Falling Despite IRS Terminations

Choose your media outlet carefully to try to get complete information which, admittedly, is coming at warp speed these days! The IRS job cuts will not affect employees critical to the filing season. Half of the cuts will be from the Small Business/Self-Employed Division; reducing workforce that is allegedly not fully occupied. This may be a relief to small business owners. In 2023, there were approximately 83,000 people working at the IRS, so even after the anticipated cut of 6,000, the IRS will still have approximately 94,000 employees: more than 10% greater than 2023.

If you want to worry about something, IRS Taxpayer Advocate, Erin Collins, in her 2024 Annual Report to Congress stated that 63% of the IRS workforce is eligible to retire within six years. Imagine what the wait time will look like in another five years if something doesn’t change.
