Imagine how tempting it would be if you had access to the federal income tax information of your neighbors, your boss, or an old boyfriend! The IRS implemented the Unauthorized Access, Attempted Access, or Inspection of Taxpayer Records (UNAX) program to help monitor and mitigate the occurrence of unauthorized access.
According to the recent information from TIGTA, 642 employees have been referred for prosecution for unauthorized access to sensitive taxpayer information, with a total of 1,028 violations. If convicted, defendants can face a fine of up to $250,000 and a maximum of 10 years in prison.
