IRS Warns of Scams Targeting Older Adults

by | Jun 12, 2024 | IRS, Scams |

Among the different scams individuals potentially face, a new scam is emerging where fraudsters pose as IRS or other government agents to defraud older adults. They use fear and intimidation tactics to convince older adults that they owe taxes or are due a refund. However, they demand payment through unusual means such as gift cards, wire transfers, or paid debit cards, thus making it more difficult to track. The IRS is encouraging individuals to be aware of the typical process for communication when someone owes taxes or is due a refund. Predominantly, the IRS will send a notice through USPS, and will only contact individuals by phone in specific situations. In addition, IRS agents will not demand payment by any alternative means and will always offer the opportunity to dispute or appeal the charges.

The National Elder Fraud Hotline is a resource for victims of elder fraud and is available Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM EST, at 833-FRAUD-11 (833-372-8311).
