Last week, investigative journal, The Markup, published their investigation into H&R Block, Tax Act, and TaxSlayer and concluded they have been “quietly transmitting” taxpayers’ data to Facebook. Sensitive information, including income, refund amounts, and even college scholarship amounts, are transmitted via code called Meta Pixel and then used in Facebook’s advertising algorithms. Approximately 150 million tax returns are filed electronically, and The Markup’s investigation found that many of the most widely used online filing services use this Meta Pixel.
