The IRS issued its Criminal Investigation Division’s annual report regarding its activities and successes in thwarting tax crimes over the past year.

Primary areas of investigation included cybercrimes involving cryptocurrency, employment tax, international tax enforcement, and identity theft. Corporate fraud and money laundering were also top areas of investigation.

CI opened nearly 2,500 cases with a conviction rate of 91.2 percent. The IRS credits its success by working harder and smarter, using data analytics and an increase in international partnerships to assist in finding the most impactful cases.
