Do You Qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit?

On Behalf of | Feb 10, 2016 | IRS |

Taxpayers in the United States with valid Social Security numbers may be eligible for a federal Earned Income Tax Credit if they meet certain criteria. The Internal Revenue Service has created an online “EITC Assistant” to help you determine if you are one of these qualifying taxpayers.

According to an IRS press release, “Millions of taxpayers who earned $53,267 or less last year may qualify for EITC for the first time in 2016.” Over $66 billion in earned income tax credits were distributed among nearly 28 million eligible workers last year. Taxpayers who qualify for the EITC and owe no taxes may receive a refund of the credit balance.

To be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, taxpayers must timely file (by April 18, 2016) accurate returns and include valid Social Security numbers for themselves and their dependents, even if they are not otherwise required to file taxes.
