On Behalf of | Jun 7, 2017 | IRS |

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) has released its semi-annual report to Congress for the period October 1, 2016 through March 31, 2017. The reports summarizes data about the agency’s notable audits, investigations, inspections, and evaluations to provide oversight to the IRS.

One major focus of TIGTA’s work was the investigation into the pervasive IRS impersonation scams that led to the indictment of 61 people in October, 2016 (which we previously wrote about here). More than 1.9 million people reported to TIGTA that they received an impersonation call during the current reporting period.

TIGTA has also made significant recommendations to the IRS regarding how to improve its identification of fraudulently filed tax returns involving identity theft and otherwise protect taxpayer data.
